How do I zip files or folders?

Zipping files or a folder is helpful for sharing multiple files at once or submitting assessments in a single folder. Windows already includes a built-in functionality to compress files—no extra software is needed.

How to create a .zip file in Windows

Follow these simple steps:

  1. Locate the files or folders you want to include in the .zip file
  2. Select them by clicking (hold Ctrl to select multiple files)
  3. Right-click on one of the selected files or folders
  4. Hover over the Send to option in the menu
  5. Click Compressed (zipped) folder
  6. A new .zip file will be created in the same location
  7. You can rename it by right-clicking and choosing Rename

You’ll see your new folder with a zipper icon and a .zip extension. It contains the files/folders you selected, which are now compressed and ready to upload, email, or store.
